Experiment Beauty’s latest innovation has arrived and of course, I’m going to review it for you! What is it? It’s the new Experiment Beauty Plasma Wash ($22)! What’s it do? It not only cleanses but it’s also proven to restore moisture and allows your skin to retain it after a cleanse. Ok, so, am I disappointed it isn’t an eye cream? Yes! I NEED an Experiment Beauty Eye Cream like I need the air I breath. No but seriously, I am eagerly awaiting the day our fine friends at Experiment Beauty finally launch one. Experiment Beauty provided me with an early sample of Plasma Wash but even if they hadn’t gone all out of their way to send me a tube I’d have totally ran to buy it on launch day (which happens to be this week by the very way!). I’m a rather big fan of Experiment Beauty and trust the brand completely. They are still very much an infant in the skincare world but what they do have available are highly effective, well formulated products that work on my dry skin. As someone who struggles with dry skin I’m always looking for cleansers that don’t leave me dry or feeling tight after a cleanse. The idea behind Experiment Beauty Plasma Wash is to not only clean your skin but also, to not strip it. But the most important part is it uses glycerin depositing compounds to build a protective moisture layer that stays there even after you rinse. Sounds gimmicky? It isn’t. It actually works.
This is a fragrance-free formula that contains 15% glycerin. We all know how Experiment Beauty loves glycerin and lord knows they made me a convert as I was all about hyaluronic acid till they singlehandedly convinced me that glycerin was way more awesome. This also contains Jojoba oil as well as fatty acids to keep skin soft and smooth. But the real secret is the castoryl maleate. What does that do? The Plasma Wash is formulated with 0.5 of this choice little ingredient and it basically helps to provide a protective barrier so as you rinse off the cleanser you won’t lose all that moisture that the glycerin supplies. It allows the glycerin to stick around well after you’ve rinsed your face off which means you retain all that moisture well after your cleanse. Pretty cool right?
This is truly fragrance-free. You smell nothing. Absolutely nothing. I’ve run across plenty of cleansers that say fragrance-free and they are but sometimes they have a rather weird soapy scent to them but this smells like nothing. I was pretty impressed with that because I’ve noticed that as I get older I do appreciate skincare that’s fragrance-free. As for the formula, Experiment Beauty calls it a gel cream but personally, I thought it was more of a thicker gel consistency. It creates a very low lather but just enough you feel like your face is getting clean. And yeah, I realize that sounds absurd but I do require a bit of lather to feel like stuff is working when it comes to gel cleansers. According to Experiment the best way use it is on a wet face. Get about a dime size amount (or I prefer a little bit more) onto your wet hands, work into a lather, and start washing your face. It gel has the same runny and thick consistency as Super Satty and as you’re applying it to your wet face versus your hands you’ll notice that it feels slippery. It just feels like I’m cleansing with Super Satty oddly enough! If anyone has soft water this is exactly how it feels on your face. It’s a little odd as it feels like I’m applying a serum on my skin versus a cleanser and that feels actually carries through well after the rinse. As I splash water on my face I feel like I still have it on my skin and that’s in fact how it’s supposed to feel as it’s sealing in that glycerin. Once I pat my face dry my skin it’s soft, not tight, not dry, and feels smooth. It’s almost as if I applied a lightweight moisturizer after the cleanse but I haven’t. The concept is rather weird and interesting and my dry skin is soaking it all up!
For a stubborn wash which may include waterproof makeup or SPF they recommend a rinse and repeat where you’re cleansing not once but twice. Personally, I didn’t need to do this. It worked perfectly fine by itself to get off my makeup and SPF without a hiccup. But according to them it’s great as both a first and a second cleansing step which means you can skip your oil or balm cleanser if you want! Speaking of which I did try it with as my first cleanse being with a cleansing oil and my second one with the Plasma Wash and I actually like how it feels using it as both a first and second cleanser versus using it with other products. It just seems to work best when used alone.
Experiment Beauty Plasma Wash gets a Muse Approval over here. I liked this one a lot and do think it’s worth purchasing especially if you have drier skin and need something gently yet moisturizing!
