Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer Review & Swatches

As you may know, Covergirl has introduced four new facial primers to their main catalog, one of which is the new Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer. This “sticky” gel primer promises a dewy finish that tightens and grips makeup for all day wear. It’s nice to see Covergirl taking on the gripping primer trend. The launch comes at just the right time since E.L.F. recently brought back my beloved Jelly Pop Dew Primer, which puts the new Covergirl formula in competition with it. But if you love a good sticky primer, Covergirl’s new formula isn’t going to do it for you!

So far, I’ve tried two of the four new Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancers, one of which was the TruBlend Skin Enhancer Plush Plump Primer, and both have proved disappointing.

Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer is a lightweight gel primer that’s 0.81 oz in size and $12.99. It’s marketed as a gripping foundation that contains Vitamin C to grip and lock hydration. According to Covergirl, the primers were created for use alone or together. I didn’t try them together as applying two or three primers at once felt overkill. Not to mention I wanted to see how each performed on its own. I really don’t understand the whole “Vitamin C grips and locks in hydration” but ok…?

If you’ve used products like Jelly Pop Dew Primer, Milk Hydro Grip, and Dermablend Insta-Grip Jelly Primer 3-in-1 Multi-Tasking Primer you’re very familiar with their texture, formula, and application. These formulas tend to feeling sticky and have a dewy finish at first but set to a lightly hydration one. That stickiness is what seals and locks down the foundation. Unfortunately, Covergirl didn’t capture that stickiness.

I couldn’t tell the difference between the Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer and the TruBlend Skin Enhancer Plush Plump Primer. They both feel the same, apply the same, and the formulas are pretty much the same. They both have a lightweight gel consistency that absorbs easily and feels refreshing on skin. Both are great picks for anyone with drier skin, as they are hydrating. I did feel the Sticky Grip formula was a bit more moisturizing, though, and it felt a little greasy if I applied too much! A little dot is plenty to do your entire face. I wouldn’t say it extended my foundation’s wear, but it created a nice smooth canvas to adhere to.

This is just a meh for me, to be honest. There are hundreds of hydrating primers on the market and this isn’t the cheapest nor the best of them. I think it’s rather disappointing they called it a gripping primer, as it really didn’t grip anything, nor did it have the traditional stickiness associated with such a formula.

Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer wasn’t for me sadly. But it is available now for those who want to check it out.

Covergirl TruBlend Skin Enhancer Sticky Grip Primer is a new “gripping” primer with a gel formula containing hydrating aloe vera and hyaluronic acid. This gel-based primer absorbs easily into the skin and has a light hydrating feel so long as you don’t use too much. I found it was a bit too moisturizing and almost greasy if I applied too much, so I would use a small amount. It creates a nice canvas for foundation application, but I didn’t feel like it was a traditional gripping formula as it wasn’t sticky, and I didn’t notice it extending the wear of my foundation at all.

Aqua/Water/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Pvp, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Crosspolymer, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Chlorphenesin, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium Hyaluronate, Arginine,. May Contain: Blue 1 (CI 42090).
